Commonly known as an open sandwich, smørrebrød directly
translated means ‘buttered bread’. With countless combinations
from minimal to the lavish, our menu has something for everyone!

Denmark’s smørrebrød custom started in the 19th century when factory and farm workers couldn’t go home for their midday meal. Instead, they packed a lunch of a couple of slices of rugbrød (danish dark rye bread) smeared with butter or animal fat to prevent the toppings juices from softening the bread, and then topped with cold meats, fish or leftovers from the night before.

This tradition took hold, eventually moving into the Danish mainstream. Soon people started to decorate the slices of bread rather than simply using them as a plate and a quick meal. It soon become very fashionable, with people gathering to enjoy elaborate creations in restaurants and cafes. The open sandwich also secured its place at the holiday table where most Danes would enjoy a long lunch or dinner with loved ones and a glass or two of snaps, a neutral liquor spiced with herbs and fruit.

As the name implies, open sandwiches are topless. They have everything on show and there is no hiding bad ingredients. Although we do like our condiments in Denmark, smørrebrød are traditionally made with fresh, healthy and wholesome ingredients so they are fairly good for you.

Picking up a roast beef smørrebrød with your hands will likely see the toppings slide off, and find you wearing a mess of horseradish cream and pickled cucumber. Instead, gently attack it with a knife and fork – as we Danes are trained to do from a young age. When your knife saws through the dense rugbrød, the toppings smoosh against the buttered bread and your fork sticks the garnishes from sliding off.

Because smørrebrød is best enjoyed with a knife and fork, you are forced to take a break and sit down to eat and enjoy your open sandwiches. Eating slowly and taking a break, well, it is good for you, too.

Taking some time to enjoy a healthy, delicious meal… Its a win-win, or as we say in Denmark, “det er en win-win”!

This is the best and most delicious Danish sandwiches I have had outside Denmark.
It took me right back to a small cafe in inner Copenhagen. Ordering was easy, and when it arrived it was well thought out and presented beautifully, right from the stickers on the box, the box itself and the delicious sandwiches it contained, I can’t wait to be able to serve this as a catered function in the future.
